The issue with web design constitutes itself in the fact that most people have no idea about it.
The first thing to learn about 'real' web design is thus a very simple fact: Web design is harder than you'd think because it incorporates two entirely different fields: Artistic talent and a thorough understanding of the technology behind.
Many so-called 'professionals' lack either or both. While taste is arguable, technological skills are not: Clicking buttons in tools like Frontpage makes you as little a web designer as blabbering in MS Word makes you a journalist. You'd never hire such a guy for ghost-writing your biography, would you? In contrast, people know so little about web design they really believe a Frontpage-maniac will come up with a high-quality page.
To put it simple, for the impatient:
- Web design has almost nothing to do with Frontpage, Dreamweaver etc. Many web designers don't even know how to use them.
- A good web designer is worth his/her money, and won't be cheap. At the bottom of a good website is a lot of work. More you can possibly imagine (also thanks to Microsofts browser incompatibilities...).
- Anyone earning money by creating websites can call himself a professional. Whether they deserve it or not is up to you.
I don't call myself a professional web designer simply to avoid the discussion and, furthermore, since I do it as a hobby, ie., I have another full-time job.
